Video: Gas explosion rips through Utah oil refinery
Footage has been released of the moment a huge gas explosion tore through an oil plant in the United States.
The blast at the Silver Eagle Refinery in Woods Cross, five miles north of Salt Lake City, was powerful enough to cause damage to 10 homes adjacent to the factory. No one was injured in the incident. The US Chemical Safety Board (CBS) is still investigating the explosion although early reports indicate that the blast started in the diesel hydrotreater, a unit that removes sulphur compounds from diesel fuel. The blast occurred at about 9.15am when the hydrogen and diesel leaking from a pipe found an ignition source on the ground. The CBS, which is an investigative agency that has no regulatory power, said increasing concerns about the integrity of the refinery's piping led it to recommend that the refinery's refining operations be shut down for an indefinite period. In January there was a flash fire when a 440,000 gallon storage tank caught light at the same refinery that burned for 11 hours severely burning people.
